About the municipality of Leeuwarden

Leeuwarden is a dynamic and vibrant capital city, located in the Nothern part of the Netherlands in de prosperous, agricultural province of Friesland, with many lush meadows and open water. Wth 107,000 inhabitans, Leeuwarden was once a royal residence and has a beautiful historical centre, a wealth of listed buildings, fun shops and relaxing terraces and canals.

European Capital of Culture 2018 

It comes as no suprise that Leeuwarden has been awarded the title of European Capital of Culture 2018. In the run-up to 2018, Leeuwarden is working to create a culturally vibrant climate to mobilise the city, region and people.

The city of Leeuwarden is the start and finish of the Frisian Eleven-city long distance skating tour (Elfstedentocht) with fascinating museums, over 1000 monuments, special boutiques and spectacular events. Do you wish to go out and enjoy art, culture and restaurants? There is much to indulge in over here. There are several museums, such as the Frisian Museum: the living room of Fryslân. 


You visti it for a cup of coffee, a surprising present or to watch a film in art cinema Slieker Film, but above all for the museum, of course. Here, you discover all about the eleven towns and the country side, the love-hate relationship with the water, the quest for what is characteristic of Friesland, and Friesland in world context. Furthermore, there are among others: the  Keramiekmuseum Princessehof (ceramics museum) and Natuurmuseum Fryslân (nature museum).

Are you more about enjoying good food and beverage? Also for culinary highs or when going out is concerned, your are absolutely in the right place! Leeuwarden is teeming with nice little bars and restaurants with tastes from all over the world.

A versatile array of theatre and music performances is on offer in town theatre De Harmonie, Podium Asteriks (every week only five euro for the greatest bands!) and the new cultural heart of the town: Neushoorn.
